Why you need to vote and help get the vote out!
Your Vote Matters!

In the previous contract President Duffy won the right for UTLA to negotiate every year instead of having to wait 3 years between each contract negotiation.

It is important to show the UTLA Officers on the negotiations committee that Substitutes vote.

The District is waiting and watching to see how many Members vote in this election before responding to the current demands of the UTLA Negotiations Committee. A large vote for the United Action candidates who make up most of the members of the the UTLA Negotiations Committee will help them at the bargaining table.

If the other candidates win they won't be able to take office until July 1, and due to the struggling California economy there won't be any money for a raise next year. So if we are going to get a raise the best thing we can do is turn out a large vote for all the United Action candidates.

The reason we are among the best paid Subs in the country is because we are one of the few groups of substitute teachers that are part of the teacher's union. That being said, we still have a long way to go. We are teachers and we are still working for respect, greater pay for more experience or when working multiple day assignments that are less than 21 days, due process rights when you work less than 100 days, sick pay, and several other common sense fairness issues.

 I have gotten a lot of support from the union leadership and from UTLA Committee Chairs who worked together on what we want from the District. In order for all of us to get a fairer contract we need to stand together and VOTE.

I have been on the Board of Directors when more than 50% of them voted against anything I asked for to help Substitute Teachers. We now have a majority of progressive Officers and Board Members from United Action who are very supportive of Substitute Teachers and the other step children of the Union like Adult Ed, Children's Centers and Health and Human Services Members. Some of the candidates running against them were part of the group who always voted against Substitute Teachers.
