Fellow UTLA Colleagues,

The recent UTLA election showed clearly that the membership wants to continue moving forward with a leadership that is committed to strengthening the union to win improved salaries and benefits and improved working and learning conditions in the classroom.

Your overwhelmingly support strengthens us as we sit at the bargaining table with the District and work to build a broad alliance with parents, community organizations and organized labor to fight budget cuts and bring additional resources into the classroom. But the challenges facing us are enormous as the state budget crisis now approaches $18 billion dollars.

That is why it is imperative that your UTLA leadership work together as a TEAM to build resistance to cuts while strengthening our union. In the coming union run-off election for NEA Vice President the only candidate qualified to undertake this job is long time UTLA leader Jimmie Woods Gray. Jimmie not only brings more than 30 years of experience as a teacher, she also knows every key decision maker in the CTA and NEA. Her knowledge is unparalleled and it will be needed as we reach out to our affiliates for assistance during these tough times.

Jimmie is also battle tested. As an active union member during the formation of UTLA in the 1960s, Jimmie went on strike for over four weeks in 1970 when the union was forged. She again participated in the 9-day strike in 1989 that won a 24% increase over three years. That is a record her opponent cannot touch.

We urge you to vote for Jimmie Woods Gray for NEA Vice-President.
